THANKS to our VOLUNTEERS |
By Sean Melia, MVGA Contributor |
Imagine golf without any volunteers. The professional events and amateur events we know and love would come to a grinding halt. But more locally, volunteers matter to every golfers’ experience. Without starters at the first tee, clusters of groups might wonder when it’s their time to tee off, ultimately clogging the golf course. Water coolers would run dry. Slow groups would hold up the entire course.
Leo Scholl is one such volunteer who discovered golf later in life and has found various ways to give back to the game. As a starter at Yankee Trace Golf Club, he enjoys the banter on the first tee, helping groups begin their day on the right foot. Leo’s easy going nature fits with the role of a starter and player’s assistant (a newly minted term for course ranger). For More

History Made in Missouri |
Sunset Hills, MO – Ellen Port made history on Wednesday, becoming the first woman to win the Metropolitan Senior Amateur Championship. The two-day championship was played at Sunset Country Club.
Port, a 7-time USGA champion and 16-time Metropolitan Women’s Amateur champion, will now have her name etched on the George F. Meyer trophy. “That’s a beautiful trophy, and like I said in my speech, that trophy doesn’t know if it’s a man or a woman holding it, it just knows it’s someone who loves golf,” Port said. “I know that Rick Meyer’s father who donated it would be tickled because I love this game and the people who play it.” Playing from the same tees as the men, the Sunset member shot even par during the first round and was five shots back of the lead heading into the final round. Port followed that up by shooting the low round of the day on Wednesday, a bogey-free 5-under 67, to make a playoff for the championship. For More |
Stop Wasting Time |
By Dr. Nick Curry |
The number one reason I hear why people don’t incorporate fitness into their day is “time”. Now let’s get real, I believe that anyone can find that time if they really make it a priority. But I get it. Between work, kids, golf, etc. it can be challenging to make the time. If I asked you to find 60 minutes in a day only 3 days per week, you could probably do that. What about 45 minutes? 30 minutes? I think we are just kidding ourselves if we say we can’t find 30 minutes in a day to devote to our health and fitness. You don’t need to spend hours and hours each week to get the benefits of exercise. Sprint Interval Training (SIT) is a type of training that can produce amazing results and can be done with little to no equipment right at home, in as little as 30 minutes.
Interval training has been proven to reduce body fat, increase cardiovascular capacity, and increase speed and power. Incorporating Sprint Interval Training can help you accomplish your cardiovascular needs while enhancing your ability to produce more speed and power at the same time. With most training plans you are either working on one or the other, which is what makes SIT so effective. To Read More |
