Brittany is hitting her second shot on a par 5 and flares her shot towards a red penalty area that runs the entire length of the hole. After looking for about two minutes and being virtually certain her ball is in the penalty area, Brittany decides to speed up play and take lateral relief. Brittany drops another ball into the relief area. Before the three-minute search time would have ended and before Brittany had played her next shot with the dropped ball, her playing partner finds her original ball in the penalty area about 15 yards ahead of where Brittany took relief. How must Brittany proceed? A. Brittany must play her original ball since it was found before the three-minute search time would have ended and she hasn’t yet made a stroke at the dropped ball.
B. Brittany may choose which ball to play since she has yet to play another stroke.
C. Brittany must play the ball she dropped in taking lateral relief because once the ball was dropped in taking relief, it became the ball in play.
D. Brittany must go back to the previous spot and replay her second shot with no penalty.
