A golfer has a Course Handicap of 20. On the scorecard, the par-4 5th hole is Stroke Index 2. During the round, the golfer struggles badly and eventually holes out for a gross 9. For handicap purposes, what score should be used for that hole when determining the golfer’s Adjusted Gross Score? A. 6 B. 7 C. 8 D. 9 Correct Answer: C — 8 Why: The maximum hole score for an established Handicap Index is Net Double Bogey: par + 2 strokes + any handicap strokes the player receives on that hole. Because the golfer has a Course Handicap of 20, they receive one stroke on every hole plus a second stroke on Stroke Index holes 1 and 2. Therefore, they receive two handicap strokes on this hole. Par 4 + 2 (double bogey) + 2 handicap strokes = 8. Although the golfer actually made a 9, only an 8 is used for handicap purposes. The trap: A golfer who only remembers “maximum score is net double bogey” may answer 7 because they recognize the player gets a stroke. But a 20 Course Handicap receives two strokes on Stroke Index 1 and 2, making the maximum 8. |
