Alter captured the OHSAA Southwest District Boys Division II Championship, posting a team score of 288 to secure the program’s seventh consecutive District title and 10th straight trip to the State Championship.
A field of 12 teams and 72 golfers competed at Heatherwoode Golf Club in outstanding fall conditions. A cool morning in the low 50s gave way to temperatures in the mid-70s, with crisp air and very little wind throughout the day. Roger Bacon finished second at 304 to claim the other team berth at the State Championship.
Alter senior Matthew Kreusch delivered the round of the championship, firing a 6-under-par 65 to earn medalist honors by six strokes. Teammate Miles Hein finished runner-up with an even-par 71, helping Alter build a 16-stroke margin of victory. The Knights will now pursue their fifth consecutive State Championship.
Versailles senior Ethan Phlipot earned the first individual qualifying position with a 1-over 72. Wilmington junior Gunnar Martin and Oakwood senior Eddie McCarthy each shot 73, requiring a playoff for the final berth. Martin prevailed on the first playoff hole to advance to State.
Across the 72-player field, the average score on the par-71 layout was 82.47, or 11.47 strokes over par. The field combined for one eagle, 75 birdies, 604 pars, 419 bogeys, 145 double bogeys and 52 scores of triple bogey or higher.
The par-4 16th played as the most difficult hole with a 4.94 average, while the par-3 12th was the easiest at 3.10. No. 12 produced eight birdies and 51 pars, making it the day’s best scoring hole.
The par-5 ninth surrendered a field-high 16 birdies, while the championship’s only eagle came on the par-5 fourth hole.
Alter, Roger Bacon, Ethan Phlipot and Gunnar Martin will represent the Southwest District at the OHSAA Boys Division II State Championship on October 11-12 at Firestone Country Club.
