On May 17, Sam DeSpain and Jayla Pothast were awarded scholarships by the Dayton District Women’s Golf Association (DDWGA) for their success in the classroom, involvement in the game of golf, and dedication to volunteerism. This scholarship was founded in 1996 to help high school seniors with their goal of attending college and continuing their playing career. In the past, the DDWGA has also granted summer golf camp scholarships to younger female golfers, too. Over 25 years $54,000 have been given out to 67 recipients. Sam DeSpain is a four year letter winner at Northmont High School where she earned a 3.507 GPA and found success on the golf course earning a place on the All Conference First Team in her senior year. Through her volunteer work and involvement with Youth on Course, DeSpain distinguished herself. DeSpain's next stop is Kentucky Wesleyan where she plans on studying education. Jayla Pothast will head to University of Toledo with plans to study Biology and pursue Pre-Med. She boasts a 3.96 GPA at Versailles High School. While competing for the Tigers during her Junior and Senior years, Jayla qualified for the district tournament both years. The DDWGA has supported women’s golf in the Miami Valley area for more than two decades. While it offers college scholarships to high school players, it also provides opportunities for all women to compete in events and connect with other women interested in playing golf and building community around the game.Congratulations to our DDWGA Scholars |
