Greaser Into the Weekend at the US Open |
By Sean Melia, Contributing Writer to Miami Valley Golf |
After Austin Greaser missed the cut in the 2022 Masters, he pledged that he was going to focus more on his golf this week at the U.S. Open and allow other people to worry about the details.
“I’m the only one with a tee time,” he said. It seems he learned a lot from his trip to The Masters this year, both on and off the golf course. At Augusta, Greaser made the turn on Friday within shouting distance of the cut line. It was the same on Friday at The Country Club. He played his opening nine holes in the second round in even par, leaving him 2-over for the championship. A bogey on the fourth was canceled out with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole. Volunteer of the Month |
John Makclin, is a brand-new Miami Valley Golf volunteer, but it only took him one shift to prove that he deserves to be in our volunteer spotlight.
John was the last person to contact us about volunteering for the US Open Final at Springfield Country Club on June 6th. We had a spotter position become available just the evening before, and even though that wasn’t his first choice, he was happy to help. Little did any of us know, he would end up being one of our heroes of the day. A little after 2:30pm, one of our morning volunteers and afternoon spectators, suffered a medical emergency while watching a group on #17. John was only a few feet away and witnessed the volunteer collapse. He wasted no time starting CPR and directed others to call 911 and to retrieve an AED machine. He, along with others on the course, took turns administering CPR. Once the AED machine arrived, they were able to successfully revive the fallen individual. For More on John |

US Open Green Speeds vs Daily Play |
The U.S. Open is known for being the toughest golf championship, with firm, fast greens that are meant to test the best players in the world. As fans, it’s important to keep a few items in mind about how these championship conditions are produced, and why they aren’t what we experience for daily play.
Greens speeds are often a controversial topic, as many amateur players feel that faster is better. While green speed is one component of well-conditioned putting greens, smoothness, trueness and firmness are also important characteristics. Furthermore, faster speeds are not always better and often lead to slower rounds and higher scores – two things most golfers despise! For the Complete Article |
Grip Strength |
Grip strength is one of the best overall tests for total body strength. Numerous studies demonstrate a high correlation with grip strength and swing speed and golfing proficiency. Greater grip strength allows you to handle the forces transferred through the hands and wrists during the golf swing, which means less chance of injury and better control of the clubface.
The average tour player can demonstrate over 50kg of pressure on the squeeze test, with the lead side being slightly stronger. If you ask the average tour player how much force they think they use when gripping a club most will say around 50%, and research supports that. For Complete Story |
