Will this Ice Storm Hurt our Courses? |
It's too early to tell if our recent ice storm followed by multiple inches of snow will hurt our courses’ conditions as we move closer to the golf season. Ice coverage on top of any living organism, including grass, can do damage.
Creeping Bentgrass can survive under ice for longer periods of time (up to almost 100 days) than Poa annua, our area’s all too common competing variety of grass on many of our playable surfaces. Poa annua has an approximate 30 to 45-day survivability period under ice. If this storm had hit us in December, chances for turf loss would be much greater from this ice coverage. Fortunately, we're into mid-February and the golf season with it’s warmer temperatures will be here before too long. That's not to say winter injury cannot result from crown hydration, low-temperature injury and desiccation. As Mother Nature will always have the last word.

A Community Treasure |
By Contributing Writer - Sean Melia |
The Community Golf Course in Dayton, Ohio is home to two golfers who have been playing golf for more than a combined 100 years. Barb Redenbo, 89, and Ginny Gearhart, 95, have played golf all over the world and made myriad friends along the way.
Similar to most golfers, their stories wind and weave and stop and start. They each learned the game at very different times in their lives but still find joy playing a game they love.
Barb first played golf in 1944 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Barb was 12 years old. “My father decided I needed to learn the game. I was invited to play with his foursome. With the permission of the pro, I could tee off and I was allowed to putt.” For the Complete Story For PDF Version of the Story |

Following a tough finish to the fall season for the Dayton Flyers, the men's team is back in action this Monday, February 7th at The Earl Yestingsmeier MAC Match Play at Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, FL. With 7 tournaments scheduled this spring, the Flyers look to regain momentum heading into the Atlantic-10 tournament in late April. Internships Available for 2022 |
Your Miami Valley Golf Association each golf season offers golf administration internships. These paid internships can run from three to twelve months depending upon a candidate's availability, with flexible schedules based on the interns needs.
In order to be considered for an internship position, prospective applicants must be enrolled at a college or university, be a graduate student, a recent college graduate or someone just interested in Golf Association Management. A background or major in golf management, journalism, communications, or photo journalism would be an asset but is not necessary for these positions. A strong interest and knowledge of the game of golf is also a plus. The responsibilities of the intern positions entail championship administration, database management, website maintenance, junior golf and membership activities. In addition, the selected interns will also assist the staff with general administration.
Applications will be accepted until February 1. Proceed to Application |

TRIVIA QUESTION: What was the first Public Golf Course to Host a US Open? Answer: The U.S. Open was played 71 times at private clubs before the USGA made Pebble Beach the first public-course host in 1972. The deal was pushed across the finish line shortly after Samuel Morse died in 1969. Concerns from the USGA about the conditioning of a public course and Pebble Beach’s proximity to a major city were alleviated after an epic U.S. Open. |
