austin wins western amateur |
By Joe Spilker, Dittoe Public Relations for the Western Golf Association |
One year ago, Austin Greaser proved he belonged on amateur golf’s biggest stages by making a run to the semifinals of the Western Amateur.
On Saturday at Exmoor Country Club, just north of Chicago, he cemented his standing as one of the best players in the amateur game.
The 21-year-old from Vandalia, fought back from an early 2-down deficit in the final on Saturday, defeating Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira, of Beccar, Argentina, 1 up to win the 120th Western Amateur Championship. The victory capped an improbable run that started when Greaser survived a seven-for-two playoff on Thursday to take the 15th of 16 match play spots.
“This is what you prepare for, this is what you practice for, this is what you dream of,” Greaser said. “I think I’m going to have to get some sleep before it hits me what happened this week, because I am exhausted.” Greaser’s run in the 2021 Western Amateur at Glen View Club in Golf, Illinois, ended in the semifinals when he ran into eventual champion Michael Thorbjornsen, of Wellesley, Massachusetts. He went on to finish second at the U.S. Amateur a few weeks later.
His 2022 Western Amateur almost ended on Thursday afternoon. For the Complete Story |

How did our Qualifiers Do at the US Women's Am? |
Of the five ladies that qualified at Walnut Grove, four started play in the 122nd US Women’s Amateur, which plays through Sunday at Chambers Bay in Washington State. Our Qualifier from Mexico, Vania Simont, did not play and our First Alternate, Savannah Grewal then took our fifth position in the field.
In the Stroke Play Qualifying, to determine who from the 156 player field, would receive one of the 64 seeds in Match Play, all but Crystal Wang made it to Match Play. Crystal finished the two rounds of stroke play at five over par, missing the playoff for the final six seeds by just one shot. The rest of our four players, Annabelle Pancake, Mia Hammond, Savannah Grewal and Aneka Seumanutafa won their first-round matches, Aneka defeated the defending champion and 2021 Walnut Grove Qualifier, Jensen Castle. In the round of 32, Mia Hammond from New Albany, defeated fellow Walnut Grove Qualifier, Savannah Grewal, 1 up. Annabelle Pancake won her match 4 & 3 and Aneka Seumanutafa won her match 3 & 2. All three of our remaining golfers lost in the round of 16, Annabelle to Catherine Rao, Aneka to Saki Baba and Mia to Lauren Lehigh. The Semi Final and Final Matches will be on Golf Channel this weekend. Thanks to all the Members and Staff at Walnut Grove for hosting our Qualifier and we look forward to being with you again next year!
