Enhancing Playability for All Skill Levels

- Properly designed Family Tees create an optimal playing experience for golfers of all skill levels by ensuring fair and enjoyable course layouts. These tees should be strategically placed to maintain challenge and playability while shortening the course to an appropriate length for various golfers.

Recommended Yardages for Family Tees:
To accommodate different ages and skill levels, Family Tees should be positioned to create the following total course lengths:

  • Young Juniors (Ages 6-8): 1,500 - 2,500 yards

  • Older Juniors & Beginners (Ages 9-12): 2,500 - 3,500 yards

  • High-Handicap or Senior Golfers: 3,500 - 4,500 yards

  • Tee It Forward Guideline for Adults: Players should select tees that allow them to reach par-4 greens in two well-struck shots, often resulting in total yardages between 4,000 - 6,500 yards.

  • Course Rating Eligibility: To receive an official USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating, a course must be at least 3,000 yards for 18 holes or 1,500 yards for 9 holes. These minimums ensure that a course provides a recognized challenge while still catering to a range of abilities.

Placement Strategies for Family Tees:

  1. Proportional Scaling – Tee placements should be based on carry distance and expected shot trajectory for the intended players. Ensuring that approach shots remain achievable encourages proper skill development.

  2. Fair Positioning – Avoid extreme angles or forced carries that could discourage players. Instead, provide clear, playable routes to greens.

  3. Consistent Progression – A properly scaled set of tees ensures that distances increase in a logical manner from hole to hole, providing a steady progression of difficulty.

  4. Integration with Existing Design – Family Tees should blend into the natural landscape of the course, maintaining aesthetics and ensuring proper sightlines for all golfers.

  5. Flexible Setup Options – Consider moveable tee markers to accommodate seasonal conditions or specific event needs, allowing adjustments as necessary.

Implementation Considerations:

  • Marking and Signage: Clearly identify Family Tees with distinct markers and course signage to help players locate the appropriate starting areas.

  • Scorecard Adjustments: Include Family Tee yardages on scorecards and digital apps to provide accurate playing distances.

  • Course Ratings and Handicaps: Ensure that Family Tees are incorporated into the course’s rating system to allow players to establish and track handicaps.

  • Course Maintenance: Proper consideration should be given to course maintenance procedures, as any additional set of tees will require additional resources, regardless of how minor. This can impact mowing schedules, irrigation needs, and proper turf venting to maintain optimal playing conditions. Additionally, increased play from varied teeing areas may lead to higher divot concentrations, necessitating enhanced divot repair and turf management practices to preserve course quality. This can impact mowing schedules, irrigation needs, and proper turf venting to maintain optimal playing conditions.
