Approximately 7,000 Ohio high school golfers begin their journey through Sectional competition toward the District and State Championships. Southwest District qualifiers will advance to Heatherwoode Golf Club, where all five District Championships return this fall following the completion of the course’s irrigation project. Volunteer Spotlight

Mark Griggs is a new Miami Valley Golf volunteer who brings a lifelong passion for the game and a strong desire to give back to the golf community. His love of golf began while playing alongside his father, and today, Cassel Hills Golf Course and Jasper Hills Golf Club are among his favorite places to play.

Mark also volunteers at the LPGA Tour event in Cincinnati, giving him another opportunity to support the game and experience tournament golf firsthand. Professionally, he works at Tyler Technologies and remains active in sports as a soccer official.

Thanks for being involved and we look forward to seeing Mark at events throughout the upcoming years.

Samborsky Wins Two

Congratulations to Peter Samborsky II, winner of both the Senior Metropolitan and Mid-Amateur Championships. Samborsky posted consecutive rounds of 69 for a two-day total of 138, becoming the first senior player since Dan DeVore in 2016 to capture both titles.

Adam Black finished as the Mid-Amateur runner-up, carding back-to-back rounds of 70 for an even-par total of 140.

In the Senior Metropolitan age divisions, Michael Greenwood won the Ages 65–74 Division with rounds of 75–74 for a 149 total. Jeff Sparks finished one stroke behind at 150 after rounds of 72–78.

Gordon Willins captured the Ages 75+ Division with rounds of 81–85 for a two-day total of 166.

As the Senior Metropolitan Champion, Peter Samborsky II has earned an exemption into Final Qualifying for the 2027 U.S. Senior Open Championship.

In a stroke play competition with no Local Rules in effect, a player is penalized two strokes if, during the round they:

Put powder on their hands to dry them before every stroke
Wrap a towel around the grip of their putter on the 5th hole
Use a distance measuring device to measure distance only
Make practice swings with a weighted donut on their club between the play of the 9th and 10th holes

It's That Time Again!

As we move into early fall, many courses throughout the Miami Valley will begin aerifying greens. While no golfer looks forward to putting on freshly aerified surfaces, the short-term inconvenience is an important investment in better conditions. Flexible internships range from three to 12 months and provide hands-on experience in championship administration, communications, website management, junior golf and membership services.
