Doubles Regional

The Miami Valley Doubles Golf Regional Qualifier will be played at Wildwood Golf Club this Tuesday, September 8, with a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start. Teams will compete in an 18-hole, two-person doubles format (scramble) across Men’s, Senior, Mixed and Women’s divisions, with A and B categories in each. The winning team in every category will advance to the Doubles Golf State Championship at NCR Country Club on October 10.

Willis Has Good Run

Sarah Willis of Eaton, Ohio, enjoyed an impressive run at this past week’s U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, New Jersey. Willis advanced to match play after rounds of 72 and 76 earned her the No. 22 seed. She defeated fellow Ohioan Sathika Peters of Maumee in the Round of 64 and Krissy Carman of Winter Park, Florida, 4 and 3, in the Round of 32 before falling, 1 up, to Catherine McEvoy in the Round of 16. McEvoy went on to reach the championship match, where she was defeated by Ivy Shepherd of Peachtree City, Georgia.

Samborsky Wins Two

Congratulations to Peter Samborsky II, winner of both the Senior Metropolitan and Mid-Amateur Championships. Samborsky posted consecutive rounds of 69 for a two-day total of 138, becoming the first senior player since Dan DeVore in 2016 to capture both titles.

Adam Black finished as the Mid-Amateur runner-up, carding back-to-back rounds of 70 for an even-par total of 140.

In the Senior Metropolitan age divisions, Michael Greenwood won the Ages 65–74 Division with rounds of 75–74 for a 149 total. Jeff Sparks finished one stroke behind at 150 after rounds of 72–78.

Gordon Willins captured the Ages 75+ Division with rounds of 81–85 for a two-day total of 166.

As the Senior Metropolitan Champion, Peter Samborsky II has earned an exemption into Final Qualifying for the 2027 U.S. Senior Open Championship.

51st Walker Cup

The 51st Walker Cup begins tomorrow at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland, where the United States will face Great Britain & Ireland in what is the most prestigious men's amateur team competition. The Miami Valley has its own connection to the event, having produced two Walker Cup competitors: Randy Leen and Austin Greaser. The two-day match opens today with four foursomes matches followed by eight singles matches, while Sunday features four more foursomes and 10 singles matches. U.S. viewers can watch live on Golf Channel from 3:30–8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Saturday, followed by coverage from 3:00–7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Sunday.
