Ensuring Piqua CC's Legacy

Piqua Country Club, one of the oldest golf clubs in the United States, is entering a new chapter rooted in renewal and community. The name Piqua, derived from the Shawnee language, is commonly understood to mean “risen from the ashes”, a meaning that reflects both the club’s 129-year history and its future direction. Founded in 1896 on land once known as Kelly’s Grove, the club has endured fires, economic hardship, and changing times through resilience and commitment.

Under a lease-to-own framework led by Piqua CC’s Executive Committee and Melissa and Dalton Dodd, Piqua Country Club is being restored through proven, hands-on leadership focused on course quality, member experience, and community connection. With successful revitalizations at Jasper Hills and Sugar Valley Golf Clubs as precedent, this effort emphasizes steady improvement, accountability, and Midwest work ethic. Piqua Country Club is not reinventing itself, it is rising again, with purpose.

Time for More Golf
The practice of changing clocks for daylight saving time dates back to the late 19th century, though it became widely adopted during World War I as a way to conserve fuel by extending evening daylight. Germany was the first country to implement it in 1916, and others soon followed, including the United States in 1918. The idea was revived during World War II and later standardized in the U.S. with the Uniform Time Act of 1966 to create consistency across states. While intended to save energy and make better use of daylight, the practice has remained debated, with some regions choosing not to observe it at all. But us golfers love it, as it adds more light — and more opportunity — for evening rounds.

Mosaic of Early Spring Greens

Slight differences in the genetics of creeping bentgrass and Poa annua on putting greens can create a kaleidoscope of colors early in the season. It might look a little strange, but there’s usually nothing to be concerned about.

West Departs
Tom West, PGA, General Manager of Heatherwoode Golf Club, has accepted a similar leadership position at a private club in Myrtle Beach. During his time at Heatherwoode, Tom was widely respected for his leadership and his commitment to growing the game, particularly through his support of junior golf initiatives in the region. His passion for developing young players and strengthening the local golf community will certainly be missed. The City of Springboro has engaged PGA ExecuSearch to assist in identifying Heatherwoode’s next General Manager. We thank Tom for his years of service to the game and wish him continued success in his new role.

OHSAA Tournament Schedule

The Southwest District of the OHSAA Sectional and District Tournament Schedule is now available. Over a three-week stretch in September and early October, teams and individuals will compete in 17 Sectional tournaments and five District Championships, all with the goal of advancing to the OHSAA State Tournament. The schedule once again reflects the depth of competitive golf across the district and the collaboration required to stage postseason play.

A notable highlight is Heatherwoode returning as the District host, resuming the role after a brief pause due to a major irrigation project. In total, 22 postseason events will be contested, and we could not do it without the wonderful support of our host golf facilities. These courses include Echo Hills, Glenview, Miami Whitewater, National Golf Links, Pipestone, Reeves, Shelby Oaks, The Mill Course, Turtle Creek, Walden Ponds, WGC, and Heatherwoode. Their continued support is essential in providing student-athletes with a meaningful postseason experience.
