When Paint Decides the Shot

TaylorMade’s lawsuit against Callaway has pulled back the curtain on a detail most golfers never think about: paint. The case centers on claims that Callaway used UV light demonstrations to suggest TaylorMade’s balls had uneven coating that could hurt performance. At issue is a simple but critical truth — even microscopic pooling of paint in a ball’s dimples can alter balance, pressure distribution and ultimately ball flight. For tour players, that can mean the difference between winning and losing. For everyday golfers, it can mean shots that inexplicably drift offline.

Manufacturers treat coating as a precision science, using tightly controlled clean rooms, multiple paint layers and UV inspections to ensure uniform coverage. Engineers design dimples down to thousandths of an inch, knowing excess paint can disrupt aerodynamics. As the legal fight unfolds, TaylorMade has countered with new “micro-coating” technology aimed at solving uneven application. Regardless of how the lawsuit ends, one point is undisputed: in modern golf ball performance, paint is not cosmetic it's critical

Investing In Juniors

Earlier this week USGA announced that Augusta National Golf Club and Masters Tournament Charities will invest $1.5 million over three years to expand the State Junior Team component of the U.S. National Development Program. Beginning in 2026, the $500,000 annual commitment will help grow state-based junior golf programs nationwide, with the goal of all 50 states participating by the end of 2028. The funding will support athlete development, education and administrative resources, reinforcing the program’s focus on building both competitive skills and personal growth while creating a clearer national pathway for young golfers.

Team Ohio is now in it's third season and Marissa Steen now sits on Ohio's Steering Committee.

60 Years of Service

In May, The Golf Club, Meadowbrook at Clayton will celebrate a milestone few clubs ever experience — Patty Wagner’s 60th anniversary of service.

Yes, 60 years.

Patty began working at Meadowbrook at a very young age and has remained a constant presence through multiple eras of the club’s history. She currently serves in the Golf Shop. Prior to that, she served as Finance Director during Meadowbrook’s Country Club years, helping guide the club through significant operational and structural changes.

Longevity at one club is rare. Six decades is exceptional.

Across the Miami Valley, we know of only a handful of comparable careers. OB King served on the turf staff at Dayton Country Club for more than 50 years. Rob Fridley has served at Shelby Oaks since 1972, There may be others whose tenure rivals or exceeds 40 years of service, and we would welcome hearing about them. Sustained commitment at that level deserves recognition.

What makes Patty’s story even more remarkable is that her dedication to Meadowbrook represents only part of her legacy.

In March 2020, Patty was inducted into the Women in Aviation International Hall of Fame. (View Video of Induction) She is a multi-rated pilot and recipient of the FAA Master Pilot Award, recognizing 50 years of aviation expertise.

Beyond certifications and awards, Patty was also an accomplished wing walker (Pictured Above). Alongside her husband, Bob, she performed on the airshow circuit for many years, appearing in 47 states, Canada, and South America. While most of us prefer a stable seat inside the aircraft, Patty stood atop the wing of a biplane during aerial acrobatics performances.

It is a reminder that the individuals who quietly serve our clubs often carry extraordinary stories beyond a friendly face.

Congratulations, Patty, on an extraordinary milestone.

Emerging from Winter

Winter doesn’t leave a golf course quietly. As snow recedes and spring approaches, superintendents and turf crews begin one of the most critical — and challenging — transitions of the year. Extended snow cover can create hidden turf issues that won’t reveal themselves until temperatures rise. In this article, we break down what courses should be watching for, what golfers may notice early in the season, and why patience and appreciation for turf professionals matter more than ever.

OHSAA Tournament Schedule

The Southwest District of the OHSAA Sectional and District Tournament Schedule is now available. Over a three-week stretch in September and early October, teams and individuals will compete in 17 Sectional tournaments and five District Championships, all with the goal of advancing to the OHSAA State Tournament. The schedule once again reflects the depth of competitive golf across the district and the collaboration required to stage postseason play.

A notable highlight is Heatherwoode returning as the District host, resuming the role after a brief pause due to a major irrigation project. In total, 22 postseason events will be contested, and we could not do it without the wonderful support of our host golf facilities. These courses include Echo Hills, Glenview, Miami Whitewater, National Golf Links, Pipestone, Reeves, Shelby Oaks, The Mill Course, Turtle Creek, Walden Ponds, WGC, and Heatherwoode. Their continued support is essential in providing student-athletes with a meaningful postseason experience.
