John Keferl
Copy_of_Celebrating_Template_(19)- John Keferl has been a dedicated volunteer with Miami Valley Golf for more than ten years and is an active member of Walnut Grove Country Club. His passion for golf began at the age of ten, when a neighbor across the street gave him her set of MacGregor wooden-shaft clubs. Though the clubs were old, John cherished them and used them for two years. His brother introduced him to the game at Kitty Hawk, where John remembers shooting a 60 for nine holes in his very first round. That day sparked a lifelong love for the game—a journey that remains, in his own words, “a work in progress.”

Competition has always fueled John’s enjoyment of golf. Alongside his good friend Doug MacPherson, he captured the Member/Member three-day event in 2016. He also teamed up with Doug and Vivian Nate to win the Spring Better Ball in both 2023 and 2024, victories of which they were especially proud. Over the years, John has achieved numerous in-flight wins, always relishing the thrill of competition and the pressure of sinking that all-important three-foot putt.

John retired from the Dayton Fire Department in 2011 after 33 years of service and from Butler Heating in 2008 after an incredible 49-year career. Retirement has not slowed him down. He is an active member of the Corpus Christi Friers, a group dedicated to hosting fish fries that support a variety of charities. He also enjoys biking with friends, is a member of the Dayton Canoe Club, and continues to pursue his passion for golf.

Family is at the heart of John’s life. He and his wife Barbara both enjoy playing golf together and spending time with their two children and five grandchildren. Their son Michael has lived in Tokyo for more than two decades, while their son Danny resides in Sacramento. Each winter, John and Barbara spend time in California, visiting both families and enjoying time with their grandchildren.

John values his family, friends, and the game of golf, which he considers a great equalizer. Thank you for being a dedicated Miami Valley Golf Volunteer!
