Western Amateur Starts on Tuesday, July 30 |
- The 122nd Western Amateur Championship, featuring 156 of the
best amateur players from 22 countries and 27 states, will tee off on Tuesday,
July 30th. This prestigious event, known as the toughest test in amateur golf,
will begin with a qualifying round on the North Course at NCR on Sunday, July 28th,
where 84 players will compete for 7 coveted positions in the championship
proper. Since its founding in 1899, the Western Amateur has been a
prestigious national championship, renowned for its grueling format. Many of
golf's greatest players have etched their names on the George R. Thorne Trophy,
while many more have struggled to conquer this demanding competition. The field of 156 invited players will commence the championship with 18 holes of individual stroke play on Tuesday and Wednesday. Following these rounds, the field will be cut to the low 44 scores and ties. The remaining players will then compete in 36 holes of individual stroke play on Thursday to determine the low 16 finishers. These "Sweet Sixteen" will advance to the match play portion of the championship, which will take place on Friday and Saturday to crown a champion. Schedule Overview:Tuesday, July 30th - 18 holes of stroke play
starting at 7:30 AM off both the 1st and 10th tees at Moraine Country Club. The
morning wave will begin at 7:30 AM, followed by the afternoon wave at 12:30 PM. Wednesday, July 31st - 18 holes of stroke play
with the same schedule. The field will be cut to the low 44 scores and ties. Thursday, August 1st - 36 holes of stroke play
for the remaining 44 players, aiming for the low 16 spots in the match play
portion. Friday, August 2nd - Match play begins with the
round of 16 teeing off at 8 AM, followed by the quarterfinals in the afternoon. Saturday, August 3rd - Semifinals at 8 AM and
finals in the afternoon at 1 PM. Contestants who have competed in the The Western Amateur
represent the pinnacle of amateur golf.
