FTSG for the Weekend before the Metropolitan Championship
Congratulations to Austin Greaser, 2020 Ohio Amateur Champion
Ohio_Amateur_Win

Austin Greaser from Vandalia and a Sophomore to be at North Carolina won the Ohio Open in record setting fashion yesterday at Columbus Country Club.  His 18 under par, 270 total, provided him plenty of margin over the second place finisher, fellow Miami Valleyian and Wright State Golfer, Bryce Haney.

Austin took the lead from the beginning of the Championship with a first round 65 and heading into the final round had built himself an eight shot lead which he maintained throughout the final round.   His four round scores were 65-69-66-70.

Others finishing in the top ten from the Miami Valley was Dhaivat Pandya in a tie for fourth at 281 (-7) and the 2016 & 17 MVGA Metropolitan Champion, Josh Gilkison in ninth position at 284 (-4).

This was the 114th playing of the Ohio Amateur and the fifth time it was held at Columbus Country Club.  Previous winners when it was held at Columbus CC have been, Kyle Reifers in 2004,  John Cook in 1978, Robert Lewis Jr., in 1968 and Francis Cardi, in 1952.

MAKE YOUR SELECTIONS FOR THE the metro contest

Metro_Contest_Now in it's ninth year, The contest works by choosing one (1) player from each of the selection groups. (Developed from registrations prior to 9pm on July 17th)  Divisions this year are determined by WHS Handicap Index.

At the conclusion of the Metropolitan, your selected players scores will be totaled.  If your selections collectively finish the lowest you will win six (6) dozen personalized Pro-V1's (or any ball of your choosing).

Teams will be first ranked by made cuts followed by score. So a team with eight made cuts will be ranked ahead of all teams with seven made cuts, etc. Contestants who DQ, Withdraw, No Card or No Show will be assigned the next finish number after the 36th or 72nd hole highest score is recorded depending if the competitor in question makes the cut or not.

PLEASE MAKE YOUR SELECTIONS BY 6am ON Thursday (JULY 23, 2020).

larry herrmann passes

Larry_HerrmannWe are sad to report the passing of Lawrence (Larry) Herrmann, PGA. Larry passed away on Sunday, July 12th after a three and a half year battle with cancer. Larry got into the golf business in 1981 working for his brother Dave at the Wyoming Golf Club. He then went on to be head pro at Kings Island, Heritage (in Hilliard), Kinsale, The Golf Depot, Riviera, Miami Valley, and finally at Golf Galaxy. Larry was elected to PGA Membership in 1984 and has been an active Member ever since.

The following is from Larry’s brother, David Herrmann, PGA:

“Larry loved the golf business and his personality & temperament was perfect for this business. He was loved and respected at all of his jobs. He especially loved to teach and a good challenge to make everyone better at their game.  For over 3 years he traveled over an hour each way to work at Miami Valley in Dayton while living in the Columbus area.  This was while taking chemo treatments and seldom missed a day of work. That’s how dedicated he was!

Larry is survived by his wife Debi & daughter Taylor;  also son Jon & daughter Beth and a granddaughter in Texas;  his mother Mary Jean, 4 brothers & 3 sisters, and many nieces & nephews. He will be missed. Arrangements have yet to be made.  (Note: Thanks to all those PGA members who made contributions to Larry’s Go-Fund-Me account.  It allowed him to live the last years of his life without the financial worries of a lot of medical expenses).”

We will update this post when we further information regarding Larry’s arrangements.

lower body modifications for power

Lower_Body_Modifications_for_PowerWhen it comes to modifying swing mechanics for power, let’s begin by stating the obvious - the fastest way to increase your distance is to make solid center face contact on the club! So most players could easily pick up a few yards with just a standard golf lesson and proper fitting. With that said, we will discuss some of the techniques and swing modifications that have been shown to help generate more power. However, none of these will matter without solid contact on the club face.

The lower body has the most modifications for power and can also generate the greatest increase in power.  Most of these modifications are very different  from what you would consider the standard golf swing teaching mechanics taught by most golf teaching professionals today. From allowing the lead foot to lift and rotate, to jumping in the downswing, to bending the lead knee, there are many small tweaks that can make a significant impact of producing power to the golf ball.

HELP THE MIAMI VALLEY CHAPTER OF THE FIRST TEE
Bourbon_RaffleThe Miami Valley First Tee Chapter is attempting to continue operations throughout the summer, autumn and winter without the aid of necessary revenue coming from June & July lesson programs. This hardship coupled with the closing of City of Dayton golf facilities has prompted our fund raising team to find new means of funding sponsorships. The Bourbon Raffle is our latest Post Covid-19 effort to save our 2020 programs.

Please link in to the raffle website and help their efforts.
A NOTE ON OUR YOUTH ON COURSE PROGRAM
YOC_Banner

One of our core beliefs at Miami Valley Golf is believing that every child deserves access to the life changing opportunities that our game can provide regardless of socioeconomic status.

With that in mind, in 2018, we teamed up with Youth on Course to bring this national program to our Miami Valley area.

Youth on Course members can play at participating courses for $5 or less during allotted times, after paying a small membership fee which is also $5.

Our foundation (Miami Valley Golf Foundation) supports this program locally by supplementing the difference in green fees to the participating facility.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic we will need additional assistance as some of our opportunity for fund raising will not be available.  If possible, we encourage you to support this program.

An easy online contribution can be made here.

Thank you for your consideration!

Score Posting Questions
Send Additional Questions to info@mvgolf.org
Q: If I don't hole out in the "Traditional Sense" do I still post my score ?
Ball_in_HoleA: Yes,While in all of these instances, the ball is not holed per the Rules of Golf (Rule 3.3c), a round played under these conditions will result in an acceptable score for handicap purposes using the most likely score guidelines (see Rule 3.3 of the Rules of Handicapping).
Q: How can I post my score if the clubhouse is closed ?
GHIN_App_IconA: Given the current concerns of spreading the Coronavirus, we are recommending that you use the USGA-GHIN Mobile Appor post through our siteor ghin.com.  This is also a good recommendation moving forward and we will likely begin phasing out our Scoring Kiosks wherever possible to avoid future contaminations.
Q: I can't post a score as it says I'm inactive and I can't go into the Golf Shop to renew.
A: You can renew at almost all of our Public Access Facilities by following this link and selecting where you play the most golf
when to NOT post your scores
March 15th signaled the start of the New Score Posting Season in the Miami Valley.  Here are a few things to remember when it comes to NOTposting your score.  All other times you should!

When_to_PostSo, don't post your score....
  • When your score can’t be verified by another person
  • While being coached on the course
  • When you play using non-conforming clubs, non-conforming balls, or non-conforming tees;
  • When you don't play the required number of holes, Less than 6 for 9, less than 14 for 18.  For the holes you haven’t played, you post net par for the hole.
  • And when you are not playing your own ball — scrambles, shambles or foursomes (alternate shot).

And remember...A key tenet of the World Handicap System is that it is based on the fact that a you will try to make the best score at every hole in every round.

So you post just about everything and that includes scores when you play Preferred Lies or adapting to modified Holes due to the Coronavirus !
