Golf Course Architect Originally, Donald Ross designed the course’s first nine holes—with holes 1, 2, 3, 4 (later shortened), 17, and 18 remaining intact from his original layout. In the early 1970s, the construction of Interstate 75 through the property necessitated a redesign. In response, Jack Kidwell reconfigured the course and added nine new holes, creating the 18-hole configuration known today.
Piqua CC HistoryIn the 19th century, the area now known as Piqua was famed as the “Border City” and marked the beginning of the Mad Anthony Wayne Trail—the Last Outpost to the West. This frontier town was home to peacekeeping pioneers like Colonel John Johnston, notorious characters such as “Gimme a Penny Jimmy Lee” and “Crazy Albert,” and the vibrant social scene at Nell Foster’s emporium, a hotspot during the late 1800s.A pivotal chapter in the region’s history is the story of Anastasia Kelly, daughter of Michael Kelley. On February 14, 1889, Michael Kelley gifted an 85-acre tract—divided by Rush Creek—from which “Kelly’s Bottom” emerged. Over time, the parcel evolved into “Kelly’s Grove,” a beloved picnic area where locals enjoyed fishing, horseshoe pitching, and even early rounds of golf, setting the stage for the community’s deep-rooted love of the game.

Golf at Piqua began in 1896 when the original six holes were designed and built—just eight years after the very first golf course opened in the United States. In 1920, the renowned architect Donald Ross redesigned these six holes and added three new ones, creating the first nine-hole layout. Later enhancements, including the addition of nine holes in 1975 designed by Jack Kidwell, transformed the property into a classic, player-friendly 18-hole course, now recognized as the oldest golf course in the Dayton area and the second oldest in the state.
