About the Celebration Crystal |
Each year, the names of the winning teams are engraved on the base of the Dr. Philip C. Hughes Celebration Crystal, a trophy that honors the legacy of Miami Valley Golf’s second president. The crystal was donated by the Miami Valley Golf Trustees to ensure that Dr. Hughes’ lifelong love and commitment to the game are forever remembered at his beloved home club, Dayton Country Club. Dr. Philip C. Hughes, who passed away in 2013, was originally from East Orange, New Jersey. A Princeton graduate, he moved to Dayton in 1965 with his young family to begin his private practice in ophthalmology. Upon settling in Dayton, he became a member of Dayton Country Club, where he achieved numerous golf accomplishments, including winning the Club Championship in 1971. Phil’s contributions to the game extended far beyond his own achievements on the course. He made a lasting impact on the Dayton and Miami Valley golf communities through his dedicated volunteer work. He served as a devoted Director of the Western Golf Association and was a passionate supporter of the Evans Scholars Foundation. Phil was also the founding member and driving force behind the establishment of the Miami Valley Golf Association, and he played a key role in developing the historical collection of the MacGregor Golf Company. In recognition of his significant contributions, he was inducted into the Dayton Golf Hall of Fame in 2001. Phil Hughes was widely admired for his sense of humor, kind spirit, and the gentlemanly manner in which he approached both life and golf. The Dr. Philip C. Hughes Celebration Crystal stands as a tribute to his enduring legacy and his profound influence on the game he loved so dearly. |
