Random Golf Footnotes from John Fischer |
This week’s U.S. Open is being played at Winged Foot Golf Course just north of New York City. It was there that Bobby Jones appeared a sure winner after 14 holes in the final round only to find himself standing over a knee-knocking, downhill, sidehill 12-foot putt on the 18th green to get into a playoff.
Attached as a pdf file is the story of that putt and how Jones ended up in that position.

We still could use some walking volunteer scorers |
Miami Valley Golf will administer three (3) High School Championships in the coming weeks and need a little more community support to ensure these young golfers receive a wonderful experience.
We still need a few volunteers who can be walking scorers. If you are interested or know someone who is, please send an email to info@mvgolf.org or visit our submission page here. Previous experience is not needed. The three championships will be a Sectional at WGC Golf Course for Girls Division II on Monday, September 28th. A Sectional for Boys Division II at Pipestone on Wednesday, September 30th and a District Championship on Wednesday, October 7th also at Pipestone Golf Course for Girls DII. Thanks for your consideration! To let us know you may be interested! |
DEVELOPING POWER IN YOUR SWING |
Elbow-Wrist Release Power The last power source we like to develop is wrist and elbow power. Wrist release speed has been shown to be very important in adding power to the swing. The wrist can actually create power in 3 different directions. It can extend, rotate and hinge. The most powerful golfers utilize all three planes for speed and power. To Read On

A NOTE ON OUR YOUTH ON COURSE PROGRAM |
One of our core beliefs at Miami Valley Golf is believing that every child deserves access to the life changing opportunities that our game can provide regardless of socioeconomic status. With that in mind, in 2018, we teamed up with Youth on Course to bring this national program to our Miami Valley area. Youth on Course members can play at participating courses for $5 or less during allotted times, after paying a small membership fee which is also $5. Our foundation (Miami Valley Golf Foundation) supports this program locally by supplementing the difference in green fees to the participating facility. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic we will need additional assistance as some of our opportunity for fund raising will not be available. If possible, we encourage you to support this program. An easy online contribution can be made here.
Thank you for your consideration! |
Score Posting Questions |
Send Additional Questions to info@mvgolf.org |
Q: If I don't hole out in the "Traditional Sense" do I still post my score ? |
A: Yes,While in all of these instances, the ball is not holed per the Rules of Golf (Rule 3.3c), a round played under these conditions will result in an acceptable score for handicap purposes using the most likely score guidelines (see Rule 3.3 of the Rules of Handicapping). |
when to NOT post your scores |
Here are a few things to remember when it comes to NOT posting your score. All other times you should!
So, DON'T post your score....
- When your score can’t be verified by another person
- While being coached on the course
- When you play using non-conforming clubs, non-conforming balls, or non-conforming tees;
- When you don't play the required number of holes, Less than 6 for 9, less than 14 for 18. For the holes you haven’t played, you post net par for the hole.
- And when you are not playing your own ball — scrambles, shambles or foursomes (alternate shot).
And remember...A key tenet of the World Handicap System is that it is based on the fact that a you will try to make the best score at every hole in every round. So you post just about everything and that includes scores when you play Preferred Lies or adapting to modified Holes due to the Coronavirus ! |
