The History of the Golf Ball, Repeated |
An opinion from a Golf Jerk |
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." The quote is most likely from writer and philosopher George Santayana and can be easily applied to our games history with the Golf Ball! The golf ball started with a rock, then moved to the Feathery, which had an over a 300 year run. By the mid-1800's the Gutta Percha ball came along driving the price of the golf ball way down, opening up our sport to the masses. Then shortly after the turn of the last century, thanks to good old American ingenuity, Coburn Haskell, received a patent for his “Haskell” ball which some of us grew up playing. The wound Haskell ball was followed by the Solid Core ball, developed in the early 1960’s but not widely adopted until the ProV1’s came along as we entered the 21st Century... All of these golf balls brought significant changes in length! Now, add the accelerated pace our scientific communities have added to our ability to better condition our bodies and design our equipment and you see why the USGA & R&A just spent the last few years studying the yardage effect. But I ask....Is the solution not easy? Is it so hard in this day and age to have the ball be part of the "Conditions of Competition"? Ultimately, we are just talking about a very small percentage of elite players. Sure they add to the visibility of the a manufacturer but why does that need to change. Come on, let's not over think this, one of the fundamentals of the game is the ability to adapt, which we already do for wind, temperature, moisture, elevation, etc...
I commend everyone for "yet again" starting the conversation, developing the supporting reports to better determine the factors of consideration. In this writers mind, all we really need, is Turn-a-ment to take the lead and say this is what we are going to do. Paving the way for others to follow and manufacturers an out so they don't become known as the company that makes a "short ball" but a "championship ball". Now that's real leadership!

DON TOBEREN PASSES |
Don Toberen, long time steward of our game passed this Wednesday. Anytime Don's name came up in conversation, everyone just smiled as he was truly one of the good ones. He worked tirelessly on behalf of his club, NCR CC and spent many years serving as the President of the Miami Valley Masters still remaining active almost to the end. Don had just had his 94th Birthday.
Rest in Peace Don, The 1st Tee is Calling You! |

THE VISUAL SYSTEM: PART 1 - A PUTTING GAME-CHANGER |
The development and use of your visual system has an impact on every aspect of your golf game. How you can read a putt, how you align your body, how you maintain your balance, and how well you see the target and visualize your shot are all dependent on your vision or are influenced by vision. Today’s golfer relies heavily on the use of rangefinders or GPS, unless you are playing highly competitive golf and can’t use one. However, around the green is one place on the course where your vision can have a major impact. We could write an entire book on all the aspects of vision and golf, but let’s focus on eye dominance today.

WHS Change Summaries |
Subject #10: Course Handicap Calculation and Application |
| OLD WAY: Course Handicap = Handicap Index x (Slope Rating ÷ 113) | NEW WAY: Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating – Par) | WHY: Beginning in 2020, Course Handicap values will change more from tee to tee, as they will represent the number of strokes needed to play to Par.
This new calculation will allow players to compete from different tees without any adjustment – unless a difference in Par exists.
Players will be able to determine their Target Scores (the score they’ll shoot if they play to their handicap) by simply adding their Course Handicap + Par.
