Mentors Matters -7/15/2008

I can not think of a better way to start off a day of putt-putt golf then with a small rules clinic led by Ted Cremeans.  We all know studying the rules of golf is an exciting way to pass time while captivating the minds of us all.  Unfortunately, for teenagers, it is a different story.  Ted Cremeans displayed his experience with youth groups by offering the greatest prize of all for answering his questions correctly.  A simple, yet motivating, individually wrapped candy bar.  The kids definitely came out of the lesson knowing more about how the game of golf is played.

The rules of golf exercise went very well.  The kids actively participated, eagerly trying to be selected to answer a question from Ted.  Understanding how the game is played is crucial to the last week of the program, when the kids will play a round of golf.

They also spent a large portion of the day on the putt-putt course honing in their putting skills.  Although it is rare to see a giant dragon or talking tree trunk on an actual golf course, the putting stroke practice is very useful.

Also today, a debate was held between the girls and boys.  The topics focused on current events that influence their lives.  They were the war in Iraq, presidential election, abortion, school uniforms, school security, and the morality of music.  The mentors acted as a panel of judges to decide which team provided the most compelling argument for their side.  The boys won but it was very close.

Again, we would really like to thank every person who has been able to contribute their time to this group.
