Kids Take Advantage of Mentor's Help

The sun was out and shining in full force yesterday when the kids showed up to Rollandia.  Despite the incredible heat, the kids were still upbeat to begin their practice session.  Half of the group learned how to chip around the green, while the others worked on their iron play at the range.  After the groups switched positions subs and salads were devoured for lunch.

The guest speaker for this particular session was Josh Sullenberger, the director of the Huber Heights YMCA.  Josh shared his life story with the kids in hopes of helping them understand how to capitalize on opportunities that come their way.

Josh grew up living with his grandmother.  He never knew his father and his mother was only a teenager when she had him.  Josh kept himself busy in the summers by sneaking into the YMCA until he finally earned a season pass.  Although Josh was a good athlete, he was also a self-described “punk” who frequently picked fights with other kids.  Eventually he was kicked out of the YMCA.  After he graduated from high school, he decided to go to college.  Unfortunately, he didn’t last long as WSU didn’t allow him to return due to his poor grades.  After this event, his grandmother gave him the silent treatment for two months!

Eventually, Josh graduated from college while also holding a full-time position at the YMCA.  Josh made it clear to the kids he made mistakes and didn’t have the greatest parents for role models.  However, he proved to them that taking advantage of every little opportunity to the fullest is something they should all strive to do.
