How do you obtain success and avoid the obstacles preventing you from reaching your goals?

The group at Mentors Matters pondered this question on July 8 at Rollandia Golf Center.

To help the students understand what life tools might be necessary to help them achieve success, the mentors had the kids participate in team building exercises.

The kids were broken into groups of 15 and told to stand behind a rope that was placed on the grass. Another rope was placed about 15 yards in front of the students. The area between the two ropes was called "the pit of attitude." Each student could only cross the pit once by way of some "magic shoes" that one mentee from each group was given at the beginning of the drill. The groups needed to figure out how to get each team member across the pit and safely onto the side of success. The teams figured out that to accomplish the task, members would have to be carried over the pit. The kids then needed to figure out the best strategy to carry out this plan. After all, a small person carrying a big person, wouldn't be a good idea.

Both groups successfully competed the drill. Afterwards, the students were asked how they achieved success in the exercise. Many right answers were shouted out.

To accomplish the the task, the kids needed to use organizational skills.  Rather than shout and attempt bad ideas, they needed to think of concepts that could be successful.

The kids were reminded that thinking before taking action could be the difference in making a good decision over a bad one.

The students also continued to work on their iron shots at the Rollandia driving range.

Mentors Matters continues on July 13 at 11 am.
