|Thirteen juniors punched their ticket to San Diego on Monday, June 10th at NCR Country Club. The 40th Annual Ohio Junior Worlds was plagued by heavy rain in the morning and late afternoon, but all of the 156 player field finished despite the wet conditions. |
In the girls 11-12 division, Pinya Pipatjarasgit shot an 83 claiming the one and only qualifying spot from that division.
In the boys 11-12 division, Fletcher Wunderlich bested the small, but strong field by shooting an even-par 70 on the North Course. He is also the only qualifier from that division.
Katie Hallinan and Lizzie Win both shot 79 on the North Course to earn their spot to San Diego for the girls 13-14 division.
Troy Taylor's 72 and Connor Quigley's 73 will earn them a spot in the international field as well. They claimed the qualifying positions from the boys 13-14 field.
Molly Skapik ran away with the girls 15-17 division by shooting a very solid 72 on the North Course. Lexie Toth, 77, and Nina Kulkarni, 78, also qualified with their impressive scores. Lexi's 77 was the first score to come in from the North Course, which made it all the more impressive considering the heavy rains that she faced during her front nine. Molly's 72 was highlighted by her outstanding play on the front nine where she carded a one-under-par 34. Her 72 bested her score from last year's event by 9 shots.
The boys 15-17 division was once again tasked with playing the difficult South Course. While Justin Wick claimed fourth with his three-over-par 74, three players shot a two-over-par 73 to tie for first. Mert Selamet was one of those three players. His mid-morning tee time gave way to the best weather conditions as he missed the morning rain and late afternoon rain. The other two in the tie for first emerged from the final pairing. Brendan Keating and Ben Sattler were removed from the golf course twice near the end of their round due to lightning, but stayed focused through the intermissions.
Although these three were all guaranteed a qualifying spot, a playoff was needed to settle medalist honors. The players headed to one tee and once again facing heavy rains. All three players hit the fairway, but Brendan was the only player to find the green on his second shot. His two-putt for par beat out Mert's and Ben's bogeys, and rightfully earned him medalist honors.
We would like to give a special thanks to NCR Country Club, their staff, and all of our volunteers on hand for the event. Congratulations to all the competitors, and good luck to those moving on to San Diego.
