Miami Valley Golf
The Metropolitan
On Thursday, July 24th the 91st playing of our area’s amateur championship will begin at Piqua Country Club. Founded in 1896, Piqua Country Club is the oldest club in the Miami Valley and its original nine was a Donald Ross design. This is the second time that Piqua CC has hosted this prestigious Championship. The last time the Metropolitan was played at Piqua was in 2008 and Pete Samborsky was crowned the champion after an exciting playoff with Jeff Scohy. This year’s event is bound to be as thrilling as it was in 2008 with five past champions and six past Senior Metropolitan champions in the field. All eighty seven players will tee off on Thursday with the hope of their name being engraved on the Silver Trophy, which was first awarded in 1919. Tee times on Thursday will go from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the past champions teeing off last. Friday’s groupings will be based on Thursday’s scores and the lowest scores will go off last. After Fridays play the field will be cut to the top 32 and ties.
But before we can get The Metropolitan Championship started, we have our annual Past Champions Dinner, which will be held Wednesday night. The Past Champions Dinner is always an enjoyable event and will be filled with fun and camaraderie. Also, this event doesn’t just impact the people that are playing.

In order to encourage our entire Miami Valley golf community to be a part of the championship, any MVGA member can take part in the
Metro Contest where the winner receives six dozen personalized Titleist ProV1 golf balls. The Miami Valley Golf Association is looking forward to this event and we know another worthy champion will be crowned on Sunday, July 27th.
