|2013 US Open Sectional Preview|
Because of the high demand by players for the Columbus, Ohio, site, the USGA created an alternate sectional in nearby Springfield, allowing for golfers who don’t get into the Columbus site to not have to travel very far. Springfield C.C. was established in 1898 and the championship golf course designed by Donald Ross is set in the picturesque Miami Valley. The golf course itself plays 6,684 yards from the championship tees.
Current PGA Tour members Brian Davis of England and James Hahn have signed up to play at the Springfield site, along with 2012 NCAA Division I individual champion Thomas Pieters of the University of Illinois and Belgium.
Also in the field is Derek Ernst, who recently collected his first PGA Tour victory at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, N.C. Ryan Yip, a semifinalist in the 2005 U.S. Amateur conducted at Merion, also is competing. Past U.S. Open qualifiers Eric Axley & Seung Yul Noh are other competitors to watch.
